Getting admission in a decent college for a regular course itself is highly competitive these days; the threshold rises when it comes to professional courses like engineering and architecture. It is therefore very important to know about the basic requirements in order to get admission in an architecture college of your choice. This is where NATA comes into the scene. The Council of Architecture has made it regulatory to qualify in NATA to secure admission in architecture colleges since 2006. Every year it rolls out the basic entrance syllabus and contents to help NATA aspirants in preparing for the examination.

Here are ten tips that will help you in setting your priorities right so that you crack NATA smoothly.

1. SET NATA SCORE TARGET. The NATA examination comprises of three sections: Mathematics, General Aptitude and Drawing. The first two sections are evaluated on the basis of MCQ’S (120 marks total) while drawing section has 2 questions of 40 marks each (total 80 marks). To qualify, you should score 30 marks in MCQ section and 20 marks in drawing section, which means a minimum of 80 marks are required. However, if you want to get into a good college, you should set a target of scoring at least 120 marks out of 200. This can be achieved by preparing well in advance instead of last moment preparations. Take the help of a good NATA Coaching Centre(page link) and explore how you can work effectively.

2. MORE THAN DRAWING. Know that NATA drawings are not about simply exhibiting your sketching talent on paper. The questions are aimed at checking your skills in light play & shadow, scale, proportion, drawing different perspectives; memory based sketching, 3 D composition etc. You need to practise regularly and develop your drawing. 7. IMPROVISING. Common sense suggests time management is crucial in any exam- it holds true to NATA also. Use pencil colours as opposed to watercolors you don’t have to wait for it to dry. Draw with light lines and re-impose dark lines in the end, so that you don’t waste time in erasing and re-sketching right from the very beginning, in case you make a mistake.

8. IMAGINE. And put that imagination on paper. Take up any and every opportunity of randomly sketching some of the routine moments. Spend quality time in freehand sketching and if possible take the opinion of an expert. It becomes easier when you enroll into NATA coaching since experts not only guide you; they help you by means of regular assessment papers.

9. CALCULATE. Develop your mathematics by practicing and allotting definite hours per day for maths only. In this case, it really helps if you have been scoring decent marks in the subject. The sooner, the better! However, don’t panic if you realize it just a few months before your NATA exam- you can always pursue a crash course in NATA. It may not make you an expert overnight but will definitely make it easier for you.

10. COMMITMENT. Stay focused. It may feel an uphill task but with hard work, passion, and perseverance you can secure good marks in NATA.
